stimulating interest Thomas Rudzewick organized a one-wall exhibition in
conjunction with a dinner. After Jonathan Iglesias and Tony Roberts split
the first two games with Albert Apuzzi and Victor LoPierre the attendees
asked that a tie-breaker be played. Jon and Tony won the tie-breaker 11-0.

OOHA Road To Miami Tournament - Saturday May 6th, 2006 - West 4th Street
Courts, NYC
The 1st
place winners had the option to receive round trip tickets to the June 3rd
Miami Tournament or receive cash prizes. They held an open doubles and a "B"
doubles and the winners of each faced each other in the finals. In early
round open action it was Dave Rojas/Tony Roberts defeating Ray Lopez/Humberto
Baez, Eddie Styles/Wildman Rick defeating PeeWee Castro/Willie Polanco,
Ervin Irizarry/Cesar Sala defeating Eddie Styles/Wildman Rick Montalvo, and
Rojas/Roberts defeating Tyrone Snell (tournament coordinator) /Giovanni
Vasquez. In the finals Open it was a hard fought battle between
Rojas/Roberts vs. Irizarry/Sala. Ervin and Cesar starting off with
fireworks, and both took turns making great kill shots, but Rojas/Roberts
hung tuff and delivered their own arsenal of teamwork to take the match. In
the "B" bracket it was all close games, with some upsets...favorites Allen
Sanchez and Jason the "Whip" were knocked out early. Both of the teams that
made the "B" finals had lost and bought their way back into the tournament.
It was Killer Joe and
Darnell Sutton defending their home courts against Anthony Cintron and Steve
Robalino from 4th Ave/4th Street, Brooklyn. It was Killer Joe's right hand
rollers and Darnell's left hand drop shot kills, as they rolled over the
team of Anthony and Steve (note: Anthony did play injured, which happened in
his previous match). The finals were set Rojas/Roberts vs. Killer
Joe/Sutton. Both teams were fighting to see the ball since it had started to
get dark, Rojas/Roberts started the game with a 5 point lead, then Killer
Joe/Sutton came back and tied the game. Then the experienced Pro team took
over, with Tony Roberts hitting key kills to end volleys, and Dave Rojas
having great front position were just to strong for the "B" team. Cash
prizes were: 1st place: $500 Rojas/Roberts, 2nd place: $250 Killer
Joe/Sutton, 3rd place: $100 Irizarry/Sala, 4th place $50 Anthony/Steve |

B & B INVITATIONAL
by Ben Brighton
At Coney Island,
applause and appreciation rained down on the finalists and on all the
athletes for a fine afternoon of handball. Those in attendance had
witnessed the elite female One-Waller's in the city perform. Seven teams
gathered to compete in a best of three format.
Brenda and Bernice, the
tournament organizers, won a hard fought match against Gladys and Cheryl
21-15, 21-13. Next up were Dori and Barbara, the dominant team of the late
nineties with the white ace. They gave a good showing, scoring 10 and 15
in two games. Lori and Maggie, generally acknowledged as the best "big
blue" team, won their opening match 21-14, 21-12 against Dana and
Veronica. Tanya and Tee Tee won a marathon match against Rhonda and Tamiko
(13-21), 21-18,11-8 before losing to Lori and Maggie 21-15, 21-12.
The stage was set on
court one and the two best teams in the city were ready to go. They did
not disappoint. Each player showcasing their unique skills, Maggie's
power, Lori's left-handed precision; Brenda's lefty-righty kills combined
with Bernice's strong frontcourt play made for a great final. After
splitting the first two games Maggie and Lori won by the smallest of
margins 11-9 in the tie breaker.
In addition to the prize
money, handsome trophies were awarded along with fashionable tournament
shirts that are always valued by the players as a symbol of their
participation. A fine hospitality table was provided and a special mention
goes to Jeff for officiating and Melody for her assistance at this
competition. Brenda and Bernice ran a well organized, and highly
competitive tournament.
Keith Hernandez may have
caused an up roar with his recent comments about a woman in the dug out,
but to the fans in Coney Island we not only saw great female handball
players but great handball as well. If I had to choose who the outstanding
performance award would go to in the finals, it would have to be Bernice.
After a 21-9 first game loss, Bernice took the strong side for game two.
The strategy worked and the turnaround was dramatic, resulting in a 21-12
win. Quick footed Bernice was able to maneuver around Maggie for great
retrieves and re-kills. She almost carried the team to victory but the
lefty-righty tandem was able to regroup and pull it out in the nail biter
tie break.

April 29th, 2006 - John Burns Park, Massapequa, Long Island, NY
17 teams
came out on this cool spring day off the rained out date from last week that
would have had twice as many teams, but history was still made as a newcomer
blasted his way onto the handball scene again. Peewee couldn't make it so
Lefty Willie Polanco showed he may just be the catalyst behind their combo
by teaming with Carlos Cardona, to win the first Road To Miami Trip. They
also won the Liberty Championship Belts from last years champions, Will and
Chris who had lost to Oscar and Ervin in the 2nd round. Carlos and Will beat
out their Long Island 1st round opponents 21-0, which set the tone. They
then topped the super team of Dave/Tony and came back from 20-15 to shock
Ray/Humberto 21-20 in the semis. Steve and Anthony defeated Wildman Rick and
Pumpy in the other Semi-final. This lead to an All Sunset Park Final as
Carlos and Will def their park mates 21-16 to capture the glory and free
trip. 2nd place got $100 and 3rd got their money back. OOHA is excited about
sending teams down to Miami and looks forward to May 6-7 West 4th St Road To
Miami tournament where 1 B team and another A Team will get their shot at

which was coordinated beautifully by Cesar Sala , he was also assisted by

was the Game of Cesar and Lefty George against Ray Lopez and Humberto Baez.
The game was all tied at 20-20 and each team getting each other down without

Ray and Umberto 21-20. Rookie and Lefty Henry against Dave Rojas and Little
Eddie Styles with Rookie and Henry pulling out the victory on what was a
great game as well 21-16. Ervin Irizarry and Tony Roberts had some great

Ervin winning 21-12. In the Semifinal's Peewee Castro and Willie Polanco out
played Ray Lopez and Humberto, they had no answer for Peewee and Willie
21-5. |
In the other Semifinal's match Rookie Wright and Lefty Henry
Santiago vs. Tony Roberts and Ervin Irizarry in a great match that was a
hard fought throughout, but Rookie being the Michael Jordan of Handball at
the moment, showed why he can't be stopped. Rookie and Henry won 21-16. In
the Finals it was Rookie and Henry over Peewee and Willie...Great match as
well but Rookie and Henry pulled it out 21-18.

USHA Invitational doubles and Men's Open Doubles -
Sunday March 19th, 2006 - H.E.S., Brooklyn, NY

The invitational doubles pitted Matt Abbatiello and Dwayne Sampson versus
Steve Nuding and Alvaro Rebaza. The game started off nip and tuck until Matt
and Dwayne took a commanding 20-7 lead. Abbattiello’s and Sampson’s drives
and killshots proved too much as they prevailed 25-14.

In the men's doubles both teams advanced to the finals
without much trouble. The stage was now set for the former champs against
the current ones. This time the former national champions, Castro and
Polanco, outscored the current national champions, Roberts and Sostre,
25-15. The champions split $500, runners-up $250 and semi-finalists $125.
The tournament generated approximately 10 new USHA members
and 20 renewals. Thanks to Moshit Paskal and Max Rivkin for helping make the
HES available for this event, to the ICHA for donating the hospitality and
to Artie Fuchs for running things smoothly.

Creating Courts in NYC
March 8th, 2006
HANDBALLERS NEEDED TO LOBBY AT PLANNING
MEETINGS CREATING 3 NYC WATERFRONT PARKSOn again and
off again plans for handball complexes (10+ courts) on pier 5 of
Brooklyn’s evolving Brooklyn Bridge Park and on pier 62 (22nd St) in
Manhattan’s Hudson River Park, as well as on Governor’s Island will only
bear fruit if handballers strongly lobby at every planning meeting. These
handball court clusters if built, will (backdrop of the harbor and NYC
skyline) be panoramic sites for television and video coverage of national
and world tournaments.
Handball nationwide can help by calling or writing to these planning
outfits advocating 10+ (the preferred number for tournaments) courts.

will Broadcast One-Wall Handball - March 2nd, 2006 at 1am - Coney Island,
Brooklyn, NY "The piece featuring footage from the US One-wall
Nationals will air on ESPN2 next Wednesday night/Thursday morning at 1am
eastern time. It's obviously not a great timeslot for everyone on the East
Coast, but that's what ESPN gave us. The show comes on following a
basketball game and Steven A. Smith, so if people are going to record it,
you might recommend they give it some extra time in the event the game goes
into overtime. The piece focuses on Joe Durso. His story is the second half
of the show. So again, March 2nd at 1am Eastern time on ESPN2 (in HD if
available). |

The Zerega Handball Doubles Challenge - Saturday
January 21st, 2006 - Zerega Indoor Paddleball/Handball, Bronx, NY
This was the event that sent shockwaves throughout the Handball community.
The
tournament was an all night Handball marathon that started around 9pm
Saturday night and finished at 7am Sunday morning.
The
tournament was coordinated by Tyrone Snell /OOHA, Lefty Henry
Santiago/Handball 21, and Wildman Rick Montalvo/Wildman Productions. The
coordinators did the impossible, they brought back the annual Zerega
Handball Championships. This was an annual event held every October by the
late
Dave Andree, and officially kicked off the indoor Zerega Handball season
every year. For several years they were unable to convince the owners to put
on a tournament, but in early 2006 they made it happen. It was like a
Handball club/party and if you were not present you missed something
special. It almost felt like a wedding or a family reunion and not to
mention a full house of one-wall Handball superstars. There were 44 doubles
teams and about 300 fans packing the indoor facility. This night had 100's
of different scenarios being played out, just for example it was the return
of Humberto Baez playing with Ray Lopez for the 1st time since 2000, St.
James Park superstar June playing with $25,000 Miami Tournament runner-up
Ervin Irizarry, Cisco (the Bx Monster) Aponte playing with Snuka (the Bx
Beast) trying to protect their home courts, and John "Rookie" Wright (the #1
ranked Big Blue player) playing with the young talented Giovanni Vasquez
(will he step up to the pressure)...and you can go on and on. In the
semi-finals it was John "Rookie" Wright/Gio "Lil Rook" Vasquez defeating
Cisco "Bx Monster" Aponte/Snuka "Bx Beast" 21-17 and in the other semi-final
is was PeeWee Castro/Willie Polanco defeating Tony Roberts/Dave Rojas 21-3.
In the Finals it was Wright/Vasquez defeating Castro/Polanco 21-19.
Money prizes: 1st $1,000, 2nd $400, and 3rd $200 (3rd & 4th split) More info
