Fronton One-Wall Handball Open
d'Italia 2007 - November 16-18th, 2007 - Nizza Monferrato, Italy
The USA team dominated as
expected, but international players are now picking up the game and also
playing at a competitive level. Many European countries participated in the
event and after the pro level performance of the New York City players it is
only a matter of time that the rest of the world will start picking up
one-wall Handball. The winners were Willie Polanco and Tony Roberts
defeating PeeWee Castro and Joe Kaplan in the Finals. 3rd place winners were
Victor LoPierre and Steve Robalino defeating the Basque Team. Overall
this International tournament was a huge success in the growth of our sport,
so many thanks to all who were involved in coordinating this event.

The Patriot-News - Super heroes with a heart - Wednesday, November 07, 2007
Despite being diagnosed with carcinoid cancer a decade ago, I live an active
life thanks to aggressive medical treatment. But my heart aches when I hear
of the suffering of patients whose physicians fail to recommend proper
treatment of this typically slow-growing, potentially fatal disease.
Yet, my heart was warmed by the extraordinary efforts of Kevin Gibson, David
Botero and Ricardo Medina. They combined their love of the game of handball
with a desire to increase awareness of carcinoid cancer, the disease that
took the life of Kevin's wife Donna in June.
The men endured 26 hours of handball, set a Guinness World Record,
drew attention to carcinoid cancer and raised funds to educate patients and
physicians in Pennsylvania of the urgent need for early diagnosis,
appropriately aggressive treatment and regular monitoring of the disease
(news article, Oct. 19). Their efforts will save lives.
Learn about carcinoid cancer and the game of handball at
HOPEinHANDBALL.org to help achieve their goal. If our society defines
men as heroes for their athletic achievements, then these guys are truly
super heroes with a heart.

“Handball” is a play set on a Bronx
Handball Court about elderly men hanging on to the only joy that keeps these
irascible players together – the game of handball. Politically incorrect,
stubborn, proud, and pugnacious, these cantankerous curmudgeons unite to
take on a Bronx handballer’s ultimate foe – a Brooklyn player, challenging
them on their park for the title of King of the Courts and the admiration of
a long ago lover. But a wife is set on breaking up the game, and the
players’ health may be the death of them if the match takes place.
“Handball” is a play about the child in every old person, and the need to
continue life one more day.

Press Release – April 21st, 2007
The
HandballCity.me.com members website will now be called SmackitSports.com. The transformation
will take place at any time now. Please make note of the website address
change so you will still have access to your accounts. There will still be a
pop up page on the main HandballCity.com website with a log on screen.
Jimmy Russo of Handball City will no longer be involved as the
administrator/owner of this Handball social network…but will act as a
consultant during the transition. The new owner of this social
network/community that you are a member of is Angel Vega of “Smack it
Sports”.
www.smackitsports.com
This should be very positive as far as expanding this network and bringing
new fans/players to the sport of Handball. The name “Smack it Sports” can
cater to a larger market…Handball, Paddleball, Racquetball, Squash, Tennis,
and Ping Pong.
“Smack it Sports” will look to make an impact as far as making vital
connections with top players of several sports and to help promote the sport
of Handball. “Smack it Sports” will also start selling high quality Handball
Gloves and other gear. More info will be coming soon about this new venture.
Handball City will continue to look for other opportunities and ways to
promote the sport of Handball in the future. The original HandballCity.com
website will still be the Official home of the Sport of One-Wall Handball
and will continue to bring breaking news as soon as we get it.
Thanks for the support,
Jimmy @ HandballCity.com

HES Men's & Women's Open Doubles/Invitational doubles - Sunday March 25th,
2007 - Brooklyn, NY The invitational doubles final pitted Glen
Hoffman and Dan Russo versus Ron Pescatore and Pete Stefano. The lead
changed hands numerous times until Glen's drives and Dan's hook serves
proved too much as they prevailed 25-19.
Tracy Davis and Theresa McCourt reconfirmed why they are the defending
national doubles champions. They beat Floyd and McConney 25-14 and Pares and
Torres 25-18.
Joe Kaplan and Cesar Sala wouldn't be one upped by the gals and also proved
why they are the current national doubles champions. A number of hungry
youngsters showed up to play and play they did. The top seeds started
falling early and fast. In the round of 16 Cheng and Gavryushenko had
spectators gawking during their 25-19 defeat of Castro and Polanco while
Angel and T. Bastidas squeaked by Pelligrini and Retian 25-23. Paulie and
Tyree then dismantled Apuzzi and Roberts 25-15 before suffering a very
respectful 25-18 semifinal loss |

Kohl Park Open Singles - September 23rd, 2006 -
Harrisburg, PA
The summer
days were winding down, but the on-court intensity was just starting to heat
up. Kohl Park hosted the 1st annual Kohl Park Open, and all of the area’s
usual suspects showed-up, including some surprising new-comers. The
tournament ignited a new-found energy in our local players, and established
a resounding effort that the true spirit and culture of handball breathes
life into our players. My people, Harrisburg Handball has officially been
resuscitated! A mild 80-degree Saturday gave way to an all-day,
double-elimination tournament. Old School rap joints and classic Salsa
ballads graced our ears, while killers & rollers tagged the walls. The
tournament proved to be the most competitive and most electrifying event to
hit these courts in a long time. Angel Rosa was determined to make a
statement at this tournament, and claim his position as the area’s
undisputedly best player. Peter Krische was out for blood, and—at only
17—was focused on being the area’s youngest, and most riveting player to
bomb the box. Throughout the competition, both were merciless and
unrelenting to their opponents. Angel was a true warrior as he battled each
match with either come-from-behind victories, or with resilient tie-breaking
plays to crown him the victor. Peter crushed his opponents with his smart
and savvy strikes, as well as with his impeccably-positioned corner shots.
Angel reached the Finals round undefeated, while Peter shook off his one
loss and brawled to peak out of the loser’s bracket; eventually meeting
Angel for a highly-anticipated Finals championship face-off. A
“best-of-three” |
match-up was underway, and both clashed
fearlessly as they pounded the pavement and punished the wall with every bit
of gas they had. Match one revealed a steadfast Angel Rosa that was
committed to keeping his untouched game on check. Angel took the first game,
16-8. Peter, reluctant to go home early, pulled together and put on a show
with an arsenal of an attack to destabilize his undefeated rival. Peter
didn’t let-up and won the second match, 16-10. The final, winner-take-all,
bout proved to be the most brutal of the entire competition. With everything
on the line, both players were highly unyielding in their pursuit to be
crowned this year’s inaugural Kohl Park champ. Peter’s youth and vigor
ranked exceedingly well against Angel’s superior skill and strength.
However, after numerous hard-pressed volleys and point-lead exchanges, it
was Angel’s motivated thirst that prevailed in this 21-point championship
game. A 21-16 win sealed the tournament, and Angel Rosa persevered to be
this year’s Kohl Park Singles Tournament champ! Congratulations to Angel for
his well-deserved and hard-earned win; and a praiseworthy applause to Peter
Krische for his very respectable and strenuous effort. Both gentlemen
exemplified the valiant measures and true sportsmanship of a genuine winner.
A very special Thanks to everyone who participated, most especially for
their personal involvement and support of this event. The tournament
produced some fresh talent and some new faces to the courts, and we look
forward to continue growing the sport in this area. The spirit, culture, and
energy of Harrisburg Handball is very much alive and well. Thanks again to
all of the players, their families, spectators, and volunteers for helping
make this such a fun and successful run. Information

Tournament - October 3rd, 2006 - 88th St./Atlantic Ave., Queens, NY
It turned out to be a success. A Tuesday tournament like Izzy's Thursday tour to
benefit the older players over 47 and who can't get to play in the weekend
tournaments due to work. We started at 8 teams and 8 more showed but we all
decided to forget the extra money and let's get a real winner. The youngest team
won, which included a 33 yr old Rick "Wildman" Montalvo and Anthony who is 37.
Jeff (58) teamed up with Peewee but lost in the semis 21-19 to Wildman. Jaime
teamed up with Randy (52) and lost to Wildman also 21-17 which left me (Tyrone
Snell) and John (48) the only qualified geezer team to do it, but came up short
21-18 in the darkness...which also may have contributed. Bob (48) and Henry
Santiago also participated. The players seem to want more of this type of event
as it was a new fun venture for handball. info provided by Tyrone Snell -

Annual Lakewood Park Handball tournament Singles & Doubles - August 5th-6th,
2006 - Lakewood Park, Waterbury, CT
The 2006
Lakewood Park Handball tournament proved to be a success once again with
players coming into town from areas such as NYC, Pennsylvania, New Jersey
and CT. The weather was perfect for a weekend of great matches. Defending
champion Lefty Henry defended his singles title, and shared the doubles
crown with his partner Snuka. CT players faired really well against some of
the top players from the area. But the question remained..........can, or
will anyone dare to come out here and try to take away the title
from Henry? He thinks many are scared, and don't want to take the ride out
here just to be beaten. I'm a believer when I see his style of play, and
accuracy. We'll see next year if anyone is up to the challenge.

I look forward to the future, continued coverage of this great sport, and
the recognition it deserves. I'm tired of Dominoes, and Poker shows out
there! What about handball??? It's only a matter of time before someone
wants to jump on board and take this to the next level. I'll keep
trying.........
